  • PROCESS AND FACILITY
  • Built to hold 1 Million Curie of Co.60 Isotope, can be upgraded in stages depending on the volume of products available for processing. The radiation processing facility is versatile meaning it can process bulky, different shape & sizes of agro-products in a tote box of 1100mmX600mmX450mm & medical shippers of 590mmX340mmX430mm. It is a dual purpose (food & medical) facility capable of delivering 10kGy& 25kGy of dose to food & medical products respectively. The agro products can be put directly into tote boxes & medical products in corrugated boxes which are taken into the chamber by means of carrier inside the irradiation cell at speed determined by the source strength & dose required each boxes goes in 2/5 positions on both side of sources being shuffled at the product shuffling zone. When it comes out last it is disinfested/sterilized 100% ready for immediate delivery being monitored by the state of art dosimetry laboratory.

  • WHY RADIATION PROCESS:
    • This is the only ecofriendly method available today unlike heat, Ethylene oxide (ETO) fumigates. The process does not alter the freshness like character & leave no remnant residues in the product.

One shielded in 6’ thick concrete shell the process does not generate any liquid or gaseous effluents rather it encircles the surrounding area with traces of Ozone which intern is good for health .Products of any shape and size in prepacked condition can be processed due to high penetrating power of Gamma rays . It ensures bill of clean health in the product being processed. It does not require power to generate radiation it is required to move the products .It is a versatile tool to ensure food safety and security and to ensure health and hygiene.

In other methods there are many parameters to control to ensure an effective sterilization like pressure, temperature, humidity, concentration and time.

In Radiation processing there is only one parameter “TIME” to ensure sterilization.

    WHY STERILIZE BY GAMMA RADIATION

Routine sterilization in hospitals are done with

    • Autoclave
    • Ethylene oxide (ETO) for heat sensitive materials

Autoclave in case rolls cannot ensure sterility, in case of heat sensitive materials like Disposable Syringes, IV & BT sets, Catheters, surgical dressings the conventional method i.e., Ethylene Oxide has its limitation like

    • It cannot ensure sterility in rolls & bundles in dressing materials.
    • A bill of clean health cannot be ensured in case of sealed cavities, mated surfaces & small lumens.

Further autoclave & ETO sterilization both are not eco-friendly & power for autoclave may use fuels or electricity derived from mainly thermal power, ETO causes in house & as well as environmental pollution.

There is an alternative eco-friendly method to do away both i.e., Gamma Radiation Sterilization. In this process high energy gamma rays penetrate through products in packed condition & destroy all the microbes & pathogens presents in the products. 25kGy dose has an inactivation factor of 109.

    In wisdom of facts i.e.

    • In house & environmental hazards
    • Sterility assurance i.e., a bill of clean health
    • Hazards due to use of ETO sterilized Products to patient, doctors & nurses

It is advised to use radiation sterilized healthcare & surgical products.
